Ultrasound scan

We offer ultrasound examinations of the abdomen, the male and female pelvis, the breast, the leg veins, thyroid gland and testicles.

What is Ultrasound?

An ultrasound scan is a hands-on study whereby a radiologist uses a special probe to scan a particular part of the body (abdomen/fetus/joints/thyroid/breast.)  The probe sends sound-waves into the underlying area, these then bounce back from the various organs allowing a computer to generate a detailed picture of the anatomy and possible abnormalities.

It is a harmless, painless study that can be used on patients of all ages and is safe in pregnancy and children.

Doppler Ultrasound

This is ultrasound used to examine the veins and arteries. Most frequently, we use it to look for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVTs) in the legs.

DVTs are relatively common in late pregnancy, post operative patients, the elderly and after long periods of inactivity. A DVT usually presents as a swollen, reddened and painful lower and sometimes upper leg.

Ultrasound Abdomen

For examination of the Liver, gallbladder, Pancreas, Kidneys, Spleen and pelvic organs, ultrasound is usually the first and often the most useful study performed.

It is particularly useful in children as it is painless and radiation free.
